Global union IndustriAll explained the decision to reinstate the garment workers who are union leaders of the Collective Union Movement of Workers (CUMV) in Cambodia came after a year of engagement with VF Corporation (VFC).

The global union added that Pontus’ management and CUMW signed an agreement on 28 January this year, where company agreed to reinstate three of the allegedly terminated workers in the first week of February with back pay.

Cambodian held with war weapons in Trat

Ten rifles, almost 1,500 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 47 magazines and other items were seized and a Cambodian man arrested in a boat off the coast of Trat province in the early hours of Friday.

A navy patrol spotted the boat at sea off tambon Hat Lek in Khlong Yai district at 3.40am on Friday. Officers signalled it to stop for a search. A 20-year-old Cambodian man, identified only as Raen, was on board the boat.

Cambodia reports a new bird flu case, the brother of a 9-year-old who died of the virus

The brother of a boy who died last week from bird flu has tested positive for the virus, Cambodia’s Health Ministry said Monday.

The 9-year-old’s death in the northeastern province of Kratie was the first from bird flu in Cambodia this year, after four were reported last year by the World Health Organization.

The Thai Foreign Ministry clarified on Thursday that the upcoming talks to jointly explore gas and oil in the overlapping claims area (OCA) in the Gulf of Thailand between Thailand and Cambodia must take place along with boundary demarcation talks.

Chatchai Viriyavejkul, director-general of the ministry’s East Asian Affairs Department, said that energy cooperation talks could not be separated from the boundary negotiations.

The recent arrest of Cambodian activists during Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official visit to Bangkok on Wednesday was conducted simply because their actions were against Thai laws, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.
