Hun Manet received ‘warm congratulations’ from Anthony Albanese, but critics have condemned his inherited power

Members of the Cambodian diaspora in Australia have expressed shock and outrage at a letter from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offering his “warm congratulations” to new leader Hun Manet.

Cambodia’s prime minister came to power last month after an election that the European Union and United States said was neither free nor fair.

With the media and dissenting voices silenced and the main opposition party banned, the Cambodian People’s Party won the July election in a landslide.
