Young Man Dies of Machete Wounds in Gang Fight

A 21-year-old man bled to death after being slashed with a machete during a fight between rival gangs in Phnom Penh on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

The two groups met outside the QMI garment factory in Pur Senchey district’s Choam Chao commune and began fighting at about 7:30 p.m., according to district police chief Yim Sarann.

“The gang with seven members including the member that died attacked first,” Mr. Sarann said, identifying the victim as Choeun Samorn, a resident of the area.

“He was hacked just one time from behind, and cut from his neck to his head,” he said.

Police also arrested six people at the scene, the police chief said, and will continue questioning them in order to determine the identities of the other gang members.

Kung Bunly, a commune councilor who witnessed the fight, said a variety of dangerous weapons were used by both sides.

“There were machetes, hammers, iron pipes and chains,” he said.
