Man Hacked to Death in Prey Veng Rice Field

Police say they are searching for the killer of a 46-year-old man whose body was found by neighbors next to a rice field in Prey Veng province on Saturday with a series of deep gashes on his head and face.

“We assume the victim was hacked by an ax or hard metal,” Peou Chivy, the deputy provincial police chief, said of the body of Hong Porg, a laborer who had returned home from Koh Kong province about a week ago.

On Friday night, Hong Porg was fishing in a rice field about 1 kilometer outside his village in Sithor Kandal district’s Purti commune when he was attacked, said Chea Rin, the commune chief.

“His head was hacked by an ax and his right ear was chopped,” Mr. Rin said.

The body was found the next morning by villagers who alerted police at 7 a.m., he said, adding that Hong Porg left behind a wife, two sons and a daughter.

Mr. Chivy added that eight people had been questioned in the case so far, but that the search for a suspect was still ongoing.
