Dogs will be donated from abroad to take part in the government’s anti-drug campaign, with in-country experts poised to train dogs to sniff out drugs, according to an official.
While details are vague—including where the dogs are coming from, how many will be imported and when they can be expected—Meas Vyrith, secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, said the dogs would be placed at Cambodian border checkpoints.
Trained dogs cost as much as $14,500, he added, so “we have planned for people who raise dogs in the country to train dogs” in addition to those donated.
Experts living in-country with previous experience training sniffer dogs in both the U.S. and Malaysia would assist in the three-month dog-rearing process, Mr. Vyrith said.
