Cambodia’s targeting of opposition activists matters to Australia

Cambodian dictator Hun Sen’s tentacles reached out across ASEAN borders this week to stymie attempts by his political opponents to return to their homeland.

The connivance of regional governments including Thailand and Malaysia in assisting Hun Sen should greatly concern Australia, and all champions of democracy in the region.

Mu Sochua, a vice-president of the now-banned Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) was confronted and harassed by the Cambodian ambassador to Indonesia over a Jakarta press conference. More worryingly, she was detained for nearly 24 hours by authorities when she arrived in Malaysia.
