One of the most shocking moments of ABC’s Democratic debate came during the commercial break.
A picture of progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s face burst into flames on screen to reveal a pile of human skulls and dead bodies, victims of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge genocide. A woman’s voice intoned, “This is the face of socialism and ignorance. Does Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez know the horrors of socialism?”
The political ad came from a group called the New Faces PAC, a Republican super PAC run by GOP candidate Elizabeth Heng, the ad’s narrator. In 2018, Heng unsuccessfully ran to unseat Democratic Rep. Jim Costa in California’s 16th Congressional District, which covers Fresno.
