Court Delays Verdict in CNRP Officials’ Case

The Kandal Provincial Court on Tuesday delayed the announcement of a verdict in a 3-year-old case against two CNRP officials and their lawyer over their roles in a land-related protest and a subsequent exit from prison in 2011, a court official said.

Deputy provincial prosecutor Sam Rithyveasna said the court would set a new date to issue a verdict in the case against Chan Cheng, an opposition lawmaker for Kandal province, lawyer Chuong Choungy and Kien Svay district councilor Meas Peng, who was the only one of the three to attend the hastily scheduled trial on July 22.

“I don’t know the date yet, but the court will summon him again,” Mr. Rithyveasna said of Mr. Cheng.

In May 2011, Mr. Peng was charged with inciting a violent protest between villagers and a property owner.

His escape from prison was allegedly facilitated by Mr. Cheng and Mr. Choungy.

Mr. Cheng’s lawyer, Ket Khy, said he had not been informed of a new verdict date.
