What Our Editor Learned by Speaking to Hundreds of Filmmakers

Mekado Murphy makes the “Anatomy of a Scene” video series for The Times, which asks directors to explain a sequence from one of their films moment by moment.

In 2017, Mekado Murphy, who covers film for The Times, sat down to speak with Angelina Jolie, the actor and director who can mobilize the paparazzi with an afternoon trip to lunch.

Ms. Jolie had directed the film “First They Killed My Father,” based on Loung Ung’s memoir of living in Cambodia under the murderous Khmer Rouge. The movie was screening at that year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Mr. Murphy was interviewing the actress for the video series he produces, “Anatomy of a Scene,” which asks directors to explain a sequence from one of their films, moment by moment. As he began to describe the series, Ms. Jolie assured him that she, and many other directors, were very familiar with it.
