Two Killed, 4 Injured by Drunk Driver in Phnom Penh

Two men were killed and another four injured on Monday night when a speeding drunk driver careened into the back of two motorbikes in Meanchey district’s Chak Angre Loeu commune, a police official said yesterday.

Sok Tham, 46, and another man who has yet to be identified were killed instantly at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday when 23-year-old university student Rath Vireakdaro crashed his Toyota Camry into their motorbikes, deputy Meanchey district police chief Pen Soveasna said.

“The car hit the motorbikes from behind while [traveling] at a fast speed, and the driver was drunk as well,” he said. “We arrested the car’s driver for questioning because he caused the accident with two motorbikes.”

The four other victims, who were also on the motorbikes, escaped with minor injuries and checked themselves into local clinics, Mr. Soveasna said.

The suspect was handed over to municipal police for further questioning because of fears the families of the victims might take violent retribution on him if he remained in the district, he added.
