Turkish National Accused of Attempted Murder in Stick Beating

A 45-year-old Turkish guesthouse owner with a history of violence was arrested this week after he was accused of chasing and beating another Turkish man with a half-meter bamboo stick following business dispute in Sihanoukville, police said.  

Mehmet Tekoglu chased the 38-year-old man, identified only as Ozturk, with his motorbike, and when the victim fell to the ground Mr. Tekoglu beat him, according to Chuon Narin, Preah Sihanouk’s provincial police chief, in a post to his Facebook page.

The incident at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Sangkat Buon district followed a business dispute, said Sut Som On, the provincial bureau chief in charge of minor crimes. He said the the victim also was driving a motorbike, and his wife was a passenger.

The suspect, whom police have accused of attempted murder, previously was jailed for eight months on a charge of “causing violence,” and had been released in 2013, Mr. Som On said on Friday.

He said Mr. Tekoglu owned a guesthouse, the MK City Hotel, a 20-room hotel near the Sihanoukville bus terminal.

Mr. Mehmet was sent to the court on Friday, he said.
