Man Asleep on Tracks in Kampot Killed by Train

A man who had repeatedly fallen asleep on railway tracks after drinking was struck and killed by a cargo train in Kampot province on Sunday, an official said on Monday.

Sao Run, 48, had been out drinking with friends and stopped on his way home to sleep on the railway line in Toek Chhou district’s Prek Tnort commune, commune police chief Phy Dork said.

The train from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh struck him at about 8:45 p.m., Mr. Dork said.

He added that Sao Run’s wife found her husband’s body after he failed to return home.

The police chief said Sao Run’s wife told police that her husband would get “badly drunk” and had a habit of sleeping on the tracks after drinking.

She had rescued him from the tracks three times before and on one occasion, a passing train had clipped her husband and cut his arm, Mr. Dork said.

Police did not know what the train was carrying, he added.
