A day laborer with a history of violent behavior and alcohol abuse confessed to raping his 8-year-old daughter in Kampot province, a police official said on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old was arrested at his home in Kompong Trach district’s Prek Kroes commune on Tuesday after a neighbor filed a complaint to police accusing him of rape, district police chief Seng Sokunchath said.
“The suspect got drunk and raped his daughter. The daughter then went to her neighbor asking for help,” he said.
Police officers took the child to the provincial referral hospital, where staff said they suspected the child had been sexually assaulted.
Mr. Sokunchath said the suspect, whose drinking habits were well-known in the community, confessed to raping his daughter on three separate occasions after his wife left him and took their 3-year-old son to escape his physical abuse.
The daughter was now in the care of relatives and the suspect would be questioned by Kampot Provincial Court officials today, he added.
