Husband and Wife Sentenced for Murder of Lover

The Kandal Provincial Court on Wednesday sentenced a married couple to prison for the premeditated murder of the wife’s lover, giving the husband a reduced 30-year sentence and the wife a reduced 20-year sentence, a court official said.

Presiding Judge Y Sovann reduced the sentences due to mitigating circumstances—the love affair between the wife and the victim, court spokesman Ek Tep Monin said.

“The judge found out that the victim was having an affair with the woman and he goaded the husband, so he reduced their sentences from life in prison,” Mr. Tep Monin said.

Chap Sochoeun, 26, and her husband Khem Kheng, 27, were charged in July over the fatal beating of her lover, Lai Lin, 27, whose body was found floating in a pond in Kandal province.

Mr. Kheng told police he used a stun gun to shock Lai Lin unconscious on June 23 before hanging him with a rope and beating his head with an iron bar, a provincial police officer said in July.

Ms. Sochoeun was sentenced as an accomplice.
