CNRP Calls Lineup of Ministers for Questioning

Opposition lawmakers said on Tuesday they would call the ministers of defense, agriculture and labor for questioning by the National Assembly committees they control.

Senior CNRP lawmaker Son Chhay said during a press conference at the party’s Phnom Penh headquarters that letters would be sent to the ministers through National Assembly President Heng Samrin over the next two weeks.

Mr. Chhay said Defense Minister Tea Banh would be questioned over military promotions, including the promotion of three of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s bodyguards following their release from prison last year after brutally beating two opposition lawmakers.

He said there were also complaints from soldiers “that they have been working for many years, so why are they never promoted, but some young officials were promoted to general?”

Agriculture Minister Veng Sakhon would be questioned over the falling price of produce and high prices of farming inputs such as gas, while Labor Minister Ith Sam Heng would be asked to explain why so many Cambodians were leaving the country to find jobs in Thailand and South Korea, he said.
