Two drunk soldiers from the Phnom Penh-based Brigade 70 were arrested on Thursday for firing their AK-47 assault rifles into the air the night before while guarding their commander’s durian farm in Preah Sihanouk province, according to police.
Kompong Seila district police chief Hout Chanthy said the soldiers, Captain Hun Horn, 38, and First Sergeant Chim Sopheap, 34, were arrested at the farm in Stung Chhay commune.
“Both suspects were shooting for fun on the durian farm, but no one was injured. After we received a report from villagers on Wednesday who were scared, we detained them immediately for illegally shooting in public,” he said.
Mr. Chanthy said he did not know the identity of the military officer whose farm they had been guarding.
Brigade 70 commander Mao Sophan could not be reached for comment.
Preah Sihanouk military police chief Var Chanthan said the soldiers were still being questioned.
“They told us they shot eight times for fun. I think they were drunk. Why else would they shoot like this?” he said.
