Two Prisoners Escape From Construction Site

Two prisoners fled the construction site of a new prison they were working on in Kampot province’s Toek Chhou district, heading in the direction of Bokor Mountain, provincial prison officials said.

“One tricked us by saying that he was going to defecate, while the other one tricked us by saying he was going to collect firewood in order to cook rice,” said deputy prison director Nget Sok.

“We were about 30 meters away, keeping our eyes on them, but they fled into the forest near Bokor Mountain and although police followed them, they could not catch them and arrest them.”

The prisoners, Sor Mok, 32, and Toan Chrean, 39, were serving time for assault and the theft of a cow, respectively. Mr. Mok was due for release in four months’ time, while Mr. Chrean was to be freed in six months.

As is the case in Oddar Meanchey and Pailin provinces, Kampot prison officials have been using prison labor to construct a new prison facility.

Mr. Sok said the men began working on the site last Saturday.
