Two men were killed on Thursday night when their cars collided head-on and burst into flames on National Road 5 in Banteay Meanchey province’s Serei Soaphoan City, police said.
The accident happened at about 6 p.m., when Chea Chamroeun, 44, pulled out from behind a truck in an attempt to overtake it but smashed straight into 26-year-old Then Raksmey’s oncoming vehicle, according to Ky Makara, deputy chief of the provincial traffic police bureau.
“One Camry car traveling from Poipet to Siem Reap was overtaking a truck when it collided with another car,“ Mr. Makara said, adding that both men had been driving the same make and model vehicle.
“When they collided, one car burst into flames and left Raksmey to die inside his car. The other driver died on his way to hospital,” he said.
Mr. Makara said the force of the impact, which almost completely crushed the front of both cars, had severed a gasoline pipe in the Then Raksmey’s car, causing it to catch fire.
