Information provided by Cambodian anti-drug police led to the arrest of three Laotian men on Wednesday by police in Laos, who also seized 2 kg of methamphetamine, two handguns and a car, an official said Thursday.
In Song, deputy police chief of the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug department, said his officers had used informants for more than a month to monitor a drug ring in Laos that was suspected of smuggling drugs into Stung Treng province.
“But the drug smugglers didn’t smuggle across the border into Cambodia and we were afraid there was a leak,” Mr. Song said.
“So we reported to our Laotian anti-drug police counterparts and arrested them [Wednesday] at 2:30 p.m.,” he added.
All three men were arrested by Laotian police and transferred to Champasak province in Laos, Mr. Song said.
On May 10, Laotian police arrested a Cambodian woman and two Laotians, moments after they crossed the border from Stung Treng carrying 6 kg of methamphetamine.
According to Mr. Song, police on both sides of the border have been cooperating closely since early 2015 to stop the flow of drugs across the border.
In a separate case in Phnom Penh Wednesday, anti-drug police arrested 20 people, aged from about 20 to 30, at a guesthouse in Toul Kok district’s Toek La’ak III commune, said Yen Panharith, bureau chief of the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug department.
Mr. Panharith said police found the group with 28.51 grams of methamphetamine.
“Among them, three are drug dealers and some others are drug users,” he said.
He added that police were testing their urine Thursday to see if they had drugs in their systems.
“If their urine is negative, we will educate them and hand them over to their parents to take home,” he said. “But if their urine is positive, we will send them to the court and they will be punished by the law.”
