Thanks for the Letter, King Tells Sam Rainsy

King Norodom Sihanouk has thanked Sam Rainsy for a letter claiming CPP and Funcinpec leaders mistranslated the opposition leader’s New Year message.

In a brief response dated Sunday, the King said he received Sam Rainsy’s Jan 20 letter which asserted the ruling coalition partners had mistranslated his New Year message into Khmer from the original French and English versions to make it appear he had denounced the monarchy and called for a revolution.

The King said he hoped Sam Rainsy receives five Buddhist wishes of longevity, good health, peace, prosperity and strength.

“Please accept my deep affection,” the King said.

In the letter, Sam Rainsy wrote to the King “I do not recognize many sentences in the later translation in Khmer which was given to the press and delivered to Your Majesties.”

The New Year message sparked controversy last week when CPP and Funcinpec blasted the opposition leader, accusing him of betraying the monarch and calling for a revolution.

In the New Year message, Sam Rainsy said Cambodians have to stop blaming Karma for bad things that happen to them and urged them to demand more from the government.
