A student stabbed his girlfriend to death in a Kompong Cham province classroom before turning the knife on himself Thursday after discovering he had a rival for her affections, police said.
Chin Phon, the police chief in Kang Meas district’s Khchao commune, where the alleged murder took place, said Grade 11 student Thy Linda, 19, was found dead at Hun Sen Khchao High School on Thursday afternoon, while her boyfriend, 18-year-old Ty Roatha, was left with serious self-inflicted wounds.
Mr. Phon said the couple was having problems in their relationship after the victim received a marriage proposal from another man who had her parents’ approval.
“I think the girl might have listened to her parents and her boyfriend felt disappointed,” Mr. Phon said.
The suspect is currently being treated at Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh, he added.
Kang Meas district police chief So Sarith said police had ruled out a suicide pact because the girl had been stabbed three times in the back.
