Khan Savoeun, RCAF’s deputy commander-in-chief who is being considered to replace You Hockry as the royalist’s co-minister of interior, was assured by Funcinpec President Prince Norodom Ranariddh Monday that he has parliament’s support.
“Everything is good,” said a high-ranking Funcinpec official about Monday’s meeting.
Last week, several senior Funcinpec officials lashed out at the prince’s suggestion that Khan Savoeun go see Prime Minister Hun Sen himself to lobby for CPP support. The officials said they saw this as an indication that the prince wasn’t fully backing Khan Savoeun’s nomination.
“The decision has always been done between party presidents. Norodom Ranariddh looked down on Khan Savoeun,” one official said at the time.
Khan Savoeun demanded that the party set up the meeting with the premier, according to the Funcinpec official.
If CPP parliamentarians do not give support, then Khan Savoeun will withdraw his application, the official said.
The prince said Monday Khan Savoeun’s nomination, which is officially supported by the royalists, is expected go to the National Assembly’s Permanent Committee on Wednesday and will then go on the assembly’s agenda, the Funcinpec official said.
A CPP official said the ruling party will meet to discuss the matter after the assembly’s Permanent Committee makes its decision.
