Police Seek Man Accused Of Raping Girl, 11

Police in Phnom Penh are searching for a 20-year-old man accused of raping an 11-year-old girl when she was alone in her family’s rented room on Saturday.

The alleged rape took place in Russei Keo district’s Tuol Sangke commune, according to commune police chief Huy Hean.

“The suspect ran away after he raped the minor,” he said. “We are still searching for him.”

Mr. Hean said police would not name the suspect until after he is apprehended.

The victim’s mother filed a complaint with police on Sunday, alleging that her daughter had reported that the man in question, a neighbor who also rented a room in the house, had raped her.

The girl was treated at the municipal referral hospital for injuries sustained during the rape.

Ouk Kimchantara, program officer with rights group Adhoc, said she had recorded 19 cases of child rape in the first two months of this year, including one rape and murder of a child.
