Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 40-year-old man, believed to be French, at a popular guesthouse in Kandal province.
The man was found lying in his bed at L’Imprevu guesthouse in Prek Eng commune with a black plastic bag over his head that had been taped shut around the neck, Kien Svay district police chief Pa Som Eth said by phone Thursday.
Police believe the deceased man checked in using a false name and passport number, which appeared to have been copied from a previous guest’s check-in details, Interior Ministry penal police chief Mok Chito said.
The French Embassy is cooperating with police to determine whether the man is a French national, said Mok Chito, adding that police are waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
“At first, we concluded that this case is murder,” Mok Chito said.
The French Embassy declined to comment on the case Thursday.
The body has been sent to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh, while the investigation is now being conducted by the Interior Ministry, Kandal provincial police chief Iv Chamroeun said on Thursday.
