Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday received Vietnamese Communist Party Politburo official Le Hong Anh at his office in Phnom Penh and asked that Vietnam remain “calm” over recent fact-finding trips to the border led by opposition lawmakers.
Nationalist activists, often led by CNRP lawmaker Mao Monyvann, have in recent months traveled to areas along the Vietnamese border in Tbong Khmum and Ratanakkiri provinces where they claim Cambodian territory is being encroached upon.
In his meeting with Mr. Anh on Tuesday, Mr. Hun Sen requested that Vietnam prevent violence from occurring while Cambodia deals with the issue, according to Kao Kim Hourn, a minister attached to the prime minister.
“The prime minister asked the Vietnamese side to keep the situation…calm, especially in the areas that we have not yet agreed to a resolution,” Mr. Kim Hourn said, referring to stretches of the border that have not been demarcated.
Mr. Kim Hourn told reporters that the meeting was not related to the death of CPP President Chea Sim on Monday. “This visit was planned a long time ago, and he arrived here on June 7,” he said.
