PM Condemns Fake Medicine

Prime Minister Hun Sen officially inaugurated the Medical Supply Pharmaceutical Enterprise in Prek Liep Wednesday, one of four factories that makes medicines in Cambodia.

“I came here today to have an effect on the attack against the production and sales of fake medicines,” the premier said. “Some medicine is out of date. The Ministry of Health is working on this.”

Hun Sen expressed his appreciation to factory owner Lang Ly for not abandoning Cambodia after the July 1997 factional fighting. He said the government has had problems ensuring that the nation has enough medicine.

Hun Sen also said the pharmaceutical industry will not be taxed on the importation of the raw materials required to make drugs.

“The problem is that Khmers prefer French medicine, even though the formula for making the headache medicine is the same,” Hun Sen said. “If they want an electronic product, they want something Japanese.”
