Paper’s Suspension Protested

The publisher of a news bulletin suspended earlier this month has launched a new web site to monitor Cambodian articles concerning freedom of the press.

Kim Seng, whose Cambodia News Bulletin was suspended by the Ministry of Information April 4 for “systematic defamation” of government officials, said he had planned on starting the online project all along.

The website, www.freepress. itgo.com, was launched April 19 and compiles articles relating to the freedom of expression.

Separately, the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee said Friday its members are concerned that the government suspended the Bulletin.

The committee of rights groups issued a statement saying the government can only legally suspend publication if a periodical publishes news “which badly affects national security and political stability.”
