About 200 people gathered Thursday at Sam Rainsy Party headquarters to commemorate those who died during anti-government protests in September.
“We do not forget the sacrifice of all those who participated and were killed during the demonstrations,” Sam Rainsy Party adviser Ou Bunlong said.
At least two people were confirmed killed during street clashes between demonstrators and security forces and dozens of people reportedly disappeared. The UN also is investigating 34 killings that may be linked to election protests.
“We promise that the Sam Rainsy Party will not use your lives and your sacrifices in exchange for power and positions,” Ou Bunlong said. “We are determined to continue to demand everything that our people need.”
The Sam Rainsy Party and Funcinpec organized a massive sit-in across from the National Assembly to protest what they said were irregularities in the counting of ballots from the July 26 election.
“Because of the consistent refusal of the regime to investigate or prosecute anyone for these murders, we are unlikely to know how many dead there were, but dozens of bodies have been found and scores of demonstrators remain missing,” a Sam Rainsy Party press release said.
Party leader Sam Rainsy was to arrive in Bangkok on Thursday from Laos, but did not. It remained unclear when he will return to Cambodia.
