The Cambodia Red Cross, NGOs and traffic accident victims Thursday marked annual road safety week by appealing to the government to quickly pass a new traffic law in an effort to reduce road accidents.
Victims of traffic accidents and their families gathered at Chenla Theater to mark Red Cross’ annual Traffic Day. Nou Roeung, 61, said that both her grandchildren were seriously injured in motorcycle accidents.
“I want authorities to hurry up with the new traffic law because I don’t want other people to get into serious traffic accidents like my grandchildren,” she said.
The Ministry of Justice must still review the new traffic law before it can be sent to the Council of Ministers for approval, said So Pisey, deputy director of land transport at the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation.
He said the ministries of interior, public works and transportation, and economy and finance already reviewed the law.
At least 85 people have been killed and more than 2,000 injured in traffic accidents in the first three months of 2014, according to figures from the Ministry of Interior’s public order department.
