Former Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Dies

So Khun, the minister of posts and telecommunications for two decades, died in Phnom Penh of an unknown illness yesterday, his son confirmed. He was 71.

“My father got sick two months ago and has had medical treatment at his home in Tuol Kok district until he died today,” Sokhan Panharith said.

Mr. Panharith said his father served as the head of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications from 1993 until September 2013, when he was replaced by former Council of Ministers Secretary of State Prak Sokhon, and became a CPP lawmaker in Takeo province.

During So Khun’s tenure, the telecommunications sector expanded to include nearly a dozen mobile phone operators.

Mr. Panharith said his father was survived by his wife, six children and 11 grandchildren, and that his body would be cremated at Phnom Penh’s Botum pagoda on Sunday.
