Floods Worsen as Water Levels Rise in Kratie

Hundreds of families have now been evacuated due to flooding as water levels continue to rise in Kratie province, a provincial official said Monday.

Large swaths of National Road 73, which runs through the province, have been affected by the flooding, according to provincial police chief Chuong Sieng Hak.

“Some parts of the road are overflowing with water from 200 meters to 500 meters. The depth is above the knee, so traveling in vehicles has been suspended temporarily,” said Mr. Sieng Hak, adding that 234 families have been evacuated from their homes, but there have been no more deaths to add to the two people who drowned last week.

Mr. Sieng Hak said one school had flooded, but it had not affected Monday’s national high school exam as authorities were prepared to pump the water out.

Water levels in Kompong Cham province are higher than they were last year at this time, but still within normal levels, according to the provincial director of water resources, Oum Vibol.

“It is normal for people in Kompong Cham because it is always flooded, especially the area along the riverbank,” Mr. Vibol said.
