Flood Victims Still in Need Of Food Aid

Despite numerous donations made by embassies, relief agencies and other organizations, Cambodia still does not have enough food and other items to meet the needs of flood victims, Peou Samy, secretary general of the National Disaster Management Committee, said Sunday.

About $230,000 has been donated to help families who have become homeless because of the flooding and more is pledged every day. “But even though more flood relief is coming, there is not enough for all the flood victims,” Peou Samy said.

Only 184,487 out of more than 451,000 families affected by the flood have received food donations, he said. And the approximately $263,000 reserved by the government for emergency flood relief has run out. The worst flooding in recent Cambodian history has created a state of emergency in 14 of 23 provinces.

The UN Development Program is scheduled to make an announcement today to appeal to the international community for millions of dollars in flood relief aid for Cambodia.
