EDC Plans Power Line Linking Lake Provinces

Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) will spend $167 million to install a 350-km-long high-voltage transmission line connecting four provinces around the Tonle Sap lake, the state-owned utility announced in a press release Monday.

According to the release, the 230-kilovolt power line will be funded by the Chinese government through the Export-Import Bank of China, and construction will take three years to complete.

The line will be able to transmit up to 600 megawatts to the provinces of Battambang, Siem Reap, Kompong Cham and Kompong Thom and will also help to supply the provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey.

The press release also said the Chinese funds would bankroll another 100-km power line connecting electrical substations in Kompong Speu province’s Odong district and Kandal province’s Takhmao City, which will have the capacity to transmit up to 1,000 MW.
