A commune police officer and another man were found hacked to death in a rural area of Phnom Penh’s Dangkao district Sunday, according to police, who say they have not identified any suspects.

Sen Sang, chief of police for Kong Noy commune, which borders Kandal province in the city’s southwest, said warrant officer Im Sothy, 46, and villager Ean Chanthido, 28, were found at about 1:50 p.m. by young cow herders on a plot of unused land.

“The victims were hacked many times and laying on the ground, and the perpetrator may have used an ax,” Mr. Sang said.

“We are not sure when the accident happened but the victims could have been killed on Saturday night.” Mr. Sang said local villagers saw Im Sothy carrying a box of beer to the site at about 5:30 p.m.

Saturday in preparation for a drinking party, but that no one knew who he had been drinking with.

“We believe this is not a robbery case, as the victim did not bring anything with him, but could have resulted from a verbal argument while drinking,” he said.
