Commission Office Open

The new headquarters for the Mekong River Commission Secretariat became fully operational Monday at 364 Monivong Boulevard.

After 41 years in Bangkok, the secretariat decided in 1996 to rotate its headquarters every five years. The headquarters will move to Vientiane in 2003.

The office opened in July, and since then, staff and operations have been slowly transferred to Phnom Penh. Most of the expatriate workers and staff from the region have decided to continue working for the commission and have moved to Phnom Penh.

In addition, about 25 Cambodians will join the commission as permanent employees, according to a statement from the office. The commission explores sustainable development of the river.
