Cambodians, Thais Fight Border Bugs

Close to 1,000 Thai and Cambodian students joined together Monday to destroy malaria-carrying mosquitoes in Thailand near the Banteay Meanchey border, a Thai newspaper reported.

About 500 Cambodian students organized and traveled across the border to help their Thai counterpoints spray insecticides to destroy mosquito breeding grounds, The Bangkok Post reported.

Mam Bun Heng, secretary of state for the Ministry of Health, told the Post that while 7.39 percent of 103,918 Thais tested in the border region had contracted malaria last year, a much higher number—29.76 percent of 11,769 tested—of Cambodians had the potentially deadly disease.
