Cambodia, Vietnam top COVID recovery index as Asia fears new waves

Cases on the rise again in Japan and Indonesia due to new subvariants.

Cambodia and Vietnam occupied the top spots in the latest edition of Nikkei’s COVID-19 Recovery Index, showing the Southeast Asian neighbors are well on their way back to business as usual.

Around the region, however, concern is growing as the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of the omicron strain spread and countries brace for new waves of infections.

The index assesses countries and regions on their infection management, vaccine rollouts and social mobility. The higher the ranking, the closer a place is to recovery, characterized by lower infection and death rates, better inoculation coverage and fewer restrictions on movement.
