Bus Crash Kills One, Injures 14 in Kratie Province

A Sorya Transportation bus crashed into a truck at about noon Tuesday in Kratie province, killing the driver of the truck and injuring 14 people on board the bus, according to police.

“We could not determine the speed of the Sorya bus, but when we were at the scene, we concluded that the Sorya bus was overtaking a vehicle when it crashed into the big truck,” said Thort Ton, deputy provincial police chief in charge of traffic crimes.

Yoeut Bunthoeun, 22, the driver of the truck, died at the scene of the crash in Chhlong district’s Hanchey commune, said Mr. Ton.

He added that eight bus passengers who were slightly injured were taken to the provincial hospital, while six who were seriously injured—including the bus driver—were sent to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh.

Mr. Ton added that police would question the driver of the bus once he recovers.

Chan Sophanna, general manager of the Sorya Transportation company, said police had not yet informed him if his driver was at fault for the accident. “If the provincial police find out my driver made the accident happen, we will follow the law,” he said.
