B’bang PEC Low on Cash

battambang – Poll officials here are still waiting for $17,000 to cover transport costs over the election period, the president of the provincial election commission said Monday.

“We need the money for transportation and to move ballot boxes around,” said commission President Kong Srun, adding that election preparations had been hampered by financial delays.

The Battambang election commission has only three vehicles at the moment, he said, which is not sufficient to carry ballot boxes and materials to more than 700 polling stations on July 26.

Kong Srun also said poor roads and a lack of electricity at polling stations would cause further problems. He added that the commission had borrowed some materials and buildings from private sources to help with administration, and would try to ensure the process went well.

The commission is sending trainers to instruct commune-level election officials, who will in turn train the polling station officials in the villages.
