Advocates call on city to protect Southeast Asians

Providence – Amid a deportation crisis that claimed the life of one Rhode Island Cambodian in February, representatives from Providence-area Asian communities called for action from the city during a celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at City Hall Thursday night.

“There are currently 16,000 Southeast Asians with deportation orders nationally,” said Sarath Suong, director of the Providence Youth Student Movement — one of the event sponsors. “In a couple of weeks there will be another flight to Cambodia and on that flight will be a man who spent most of his life in the West End.
