Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday urged police to arrest Chhouk Bundith, the former governor of Svay Rieng province’s Bavet City, who went on the run before being found guilty of shooting three garment workers three years ago.
Last week, the National Police put out a video announcing that Mr. Bundith had been placed on Interpol’s most-wanted list in March.
After praising police for the arrests of 11 CNRP activists who were convicted on insurrection charges last month, Mr. Hun Sen on Monday said the same effort should be made to apprehend the former governor.
“The order to make the arrest remains in place because it’s a criminal case,” he said. “Even in the case of Chhouk Bundith, if police do not make an arrest the police would be wrong.”
Mr. Bundith, who shot the three workers during a protest at a special economic zone in February 2012, is facing an 18-month prison sentence for “unintentional violence.”
The renewed interest of authorities in Mr. Bundith’s case comes after his victims appealed on July 27 for top-level intervention in the case, as occurred following the assault of television personality Ek Socheata last month.
