Police arrested a 32-year-old man in Phnom Penh on Monday after he rear-ended a young woman on a motorbike with his Toyota Camry, then attempted to flee the scene of the accident.
Deputy traffic police chief Chea Kim Sour said the man slammed into the back of a 23-year-old woman on a motorbike on Street 228 in Daun Penh district.
When the suspect—whom police refused to identify—tried to drive away, dozens of witnesses gave chase on their motorbikes for about an hour.
“Many people saw the accident and tried to follow and chase the driver,” Mr. Kim Sour said, adding that police, who joined the pursuit, finally stopped the suspect on Norodom Boulevard near the intersection of Street 130.
Onlookers then surrounded the car and pelted it with rocks.
“A lot of people did the wrong thing and destroyed private property,” he said.
“It was hard to protect the driver.”
The victim of the crash suffered minor injuries, according to Mr. Kim Sour.
