Cambodian arrests rise to 94 after ‘plot to overthrow govt’

Amnesty and Human Rights Watch say 59 remain unlawfully detained, urge authorities to immediately drop all charges.

The number of people arbitrarily detained after former prime minister Hun Sen alleged a plot to overthrow his son’s government has risen to 94, according to a count by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW).

The number includes 59 people who “remain unlawfully detained and charged for peacefully expressing their views,” Amnesty and HRW said in a joint statement released on Aug. 28. At least 21 people have been charged with incitement, others with plotting.

Hun Sen alleged the plot, claiming a group known as Unity for the Nation had made false claims that the government was ceding territory to its neighbors through the Development Triangle Area (DTA) in an area bordering Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam (CLV).
