A supporter of the opposition Candlelight Party and another person have been arrested for allegedly inciting Cambodians to overthrow the government as authorities tighten a security cordon around the capital after raising fears that rare demonstrations will erupt on Aug. 17.
Huy Sopheak, an incumbent commune councilor with the opposition Candlelight Party, and 22-year-old San Phanith were detained earlier this week after they were linked to critics of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA), reports said.
“He [Huy Sopheak] disseminated information to confuse the public, inciting them to protest,” Say Veasna, a regional deputy prosecutor, told CambojaNews. “This is illegal because the project [CLV-DTA] was established many years ago.”
