Cambodia’s interior ministry has ordered police to tighten security around Phnom Penh saying an opposition group is planning a major protest in the capital on Aug. 17 which it compared with the “Color Revolution” a decade ago.
The order follows a warning from former prime minister Hun Sen to avoid a ‘Bangladesh-inspired’ protest led by an overseas group known as the Unity for the Nation which he claimed was plotting to oust his son’s government by alleging Cambodia was ceding territory to its neighbors.
Authorities said “Roub Roum Dermbei Cheat” — which has been translated as Unity or United for the Nation — operated online using a Telegram channel and had been formed out of the Cambodian diaspora with protests staged in Japan, South Korea and Australia last weekend.
