Conviction against Cambodian opposition leader upheld

Thach Setha exhausts appeals and will serve out three-year prison term.

Cambodia’s Supreme Court upheld an incitement conviction against the vice president of the opposition Candlelight Party on Aug. 9, ordering him to serve a three-year prison term for a speech he gave to supporters in South Korea last year.

Thach Setha was found guilty by a lower court of incitement to commit a felony and incitement to discriminate under Articles 494, 495, and 496 of the Criminal Code last October, for remarks made on Jan. 7, 2023, to workers in South Korea, human rights group Licadho said in a statement.

The day marks the toppling of Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge regime in 1979 after an invasion by some 150,000 Vietnamese troops and Cambodian defectors. However, the Vietnamese occupied Cambodia for another 10 years, which remains a sensitive issue with opposition politicians.
