UNESCO to inspect forced displacement in Cambodia’s Angkor Wat

The authorities removed about 40,000 people from the site since 2022, says Amnesty International.

The World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recommended dispatching a team to inspect the alleged displacement and rights abuses of people at Cambodia’s famed Angkor Wat temple complex.

The committee expressed concerns about the forcible removal of thousands of families from the UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site in Siem Reap province, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on July 26.

During its annual meeting at the Indian national capital New Delhi on July 24, the committee said it was concerned “about third-party reports concerning possible forced population displacements.”
