Cambodian opposition leader faces $1.5m defamation suit

Move comes after Candlelight Party President Teav Vannol says democracy is 'getting worse' under Hun Manet.

Lawyers for the Cambodian government are demanding US$1.5 million in compensation from an opposition leader who claimed the nation’s democratic standards have declined further since Hun Manet took over the job of prime minister from his father Hun Sen almost a year ago.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on July 8 heard that Teav Vannol, president of the Candlelight Party, had defamed Hun Manet’s government during an interview with Nikkei Asia, which was later broadcast by Radio France International (RFI).

“His administration is getting worse in terms of democracy. There is no democracy in Cambodia,” Teav Vannol said during the interview, adding Hun Manet had “even tightened” controls on opponents compared to Hun Sen.
