A British charity has launched a “focused blast” to give 100,000 dogs rabies shots in just 10 days in Cambodia’s capital city, in the country’s largest ever animal vaccination drive.
The southeast Asian country is a hotspot for the ancient disease, which is transmitted via the saliva of an infected animal and causes fatal inflammation of the brain if it is not treated immediately.
While surveillance is patchy, it is estimated that there are around 800 cases in Cambodia each year, giving the small country one of the world’s highest incidence rates.
