Lawmaker’s Virtues Remembered at Funeral

Hundreds of mourners, including First Vice President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin, attended a funeral Wednesday in front of Wat Botum for Vann Sun Heng, a leading CPP lawmaker who died last Friday.

Second Vice President of the  National Assembly Nguon Nhel gave the eulogy, saying “your kindness, good reputation and achievements will stay with us forever.

“The death of Vann Sun Heng is the loss of a popular, experienced and mature parliamentarian who had high national ideals and good work ethic,” he said.

Vann Sun Heng, a Prey Veng National Assembly lawmaker died of a heart attack in Prey Veng, where he was to join Prime Minister Hun Sen to distribute flood aid.

After the eulogy, Heng Samrin ignited a device that started the fire in the crematorium.

Before her husband’s body was cremated, Vann Sun Heng’s wife Chin Saly fell unconscious. She was examined by a doctor there and revived.

The mother of three was not able to speak to the funeral guests. Vann Sun Heng’s brother-in-law, Chey Sambath, spoke for Chin Saly, expressing thanks to the mourners.

“I am very sorry to lose my nice brother,” said Chey Sambath, a Cambodian American living in Boston in the US state of Massa­chusetts.
